To-scale testing of biological decontamination procedures, and evaluation of the results, at the Tanne plant in Clausthal-Zellerfeld

All three procedures tested were confirmed to be technically and economically suitable as treatment methods for ground material contaminated with TNT. The idea developed for scientific monitoring proved to be suitable as an instrument for large-scale procedural reviews, and should be further developed, and if necessary, standardised.

 

Summary

With the scope of a research network, the capabilities and possibilities of biological ground sanitation procedures still in the developmental stage should be assessed based on the example of Trinitrotoluol (TNT)-contaminated ground. 

The aim of this part of the project was to test biological decontamination procedures on the TNT-contaminated grounds of the former "Tanne" explosives factory, and to document these in the form of result testing. The essential criterion upon which the success of the large-scale decontamination would be assessed was that the nitroaromatic substances be eliminated from the ground to the greatest possible extent.

The tests included three treatment steps:

  • Composting procedures by Umweltschutz Nord 
  • Dynamic beet testing by Plambeck ContraCon 
  • Fungus analysis by Wisstrans 

Results:

  • The compounds typical of explosives and initially in the ground had metabolised and integrated close to and in some cases below the limit of detection. 
  • Using long-term and remobilisation tests, it was confirmed that the biologically metabolised compounds typical of explosives were integrated into the soil and therefore pose no threat. Other contaminants found in the soil, such as heavy metals or PAH, do not hinder the biological decomposition or bonding process, even when present in significant quantities. 
  • All three procedures, in comparison with ground washing methods or thermal methods, were characterised by significantly lower treatment costs.
