Ecological and economical analysis of the material flow management of acid sulfur

The methodic approach "ecological and economic plant optimization (EPO)" developed at the Department of Waste Minimization and Recycling of the TU Berlin utilizes elements of system theory, Life Cycle Assessment and business economics. The ecological and economic effects of a material flow management for high-purity sulfuric acid on five companies in the electronic industry were assessed. The obtained results can be generalized and transferred to other process chains of this industrial sector. 

 

Summary

Goal of the network project “material flow management in the chemical industry” was the reduction of economic costs and environmental impacts through re-use of chemicals. This re-use replaces disposal as the end-of-life-strategy.

Within the task of this subtask the material flow management of sulphuric acid for the electronics industry was analysed and assessed from an economic as well as an environmental point of view.

Results:

  • To tackle this task a methodological approach developed by the Department Waste Minimization and Recycling of the Technische Universität Berlin, was refined and implemented. This approach combines and utilizes elements of systems theory, life cycle assessment and business management.
  • The environmental assessment focused on the analyses of the material flow management systems of five electronics companies.
  • The results and insights of these examinations have been generalized and can therefore be transferred to other process chains for high quality sulphuric acid.
