Development of a carrier support wet oxidation procedure to minimise halogenated organic compounds in waste waters of the textile industry

In the carrier-supported wet oxidation process developed, organic halogen compounds are mineralised to form halogenides. By this method, both the pollutant content of wastewater and wastewater disposal costs in the textile industry can be substantially reduced. 

Summary

Wastewater in the textile industry is characterised by the large volumes generated (in excess of 1000 m3/d) and the diverse composition of the textile chemicals contained therein.  Wastewater disposal costs ultimately account for nearly 10% of total production costs.

In this respect, organic halogen compounds constitute an ever-present and problematic group of materials.  These compounds originate mainly from dyestuffs, but are also generated by pre-treatment and finishing processes.

Consequently, the object of this project was the effective conversion of organic halogen compounds into less hazardous compounds.  It has been assumed that the most effective method for this purpose will be detoxification by the mineralisation of organic halogen components to form halogenides.

Results:

  • In the new carrier-supported wet oxidation process developed, organic halogen compounds are mineralised to form halogenides.
  • The carrier-supported process is characterised by the restricted use of chemicals, the prevention of sludge production and ease of handling.  Multiple process stages are not required.
  • The mineralisation effect is highly dependent upon the chemical structure of the organic halogen compounds to be treated, while the success of treatment will also be governed by additional influencing factors.
  • Technological variants using the composite manganese(IV)/polymer material in stationary form and the organic halogen compound solution in mobile form have proved to be beneficial.  This reaction system is also suitable for the mineralisation of organic phosphorous compounds.
  • The new process should not be restricted to the treatment of textile wastewaters.
