Development of a mobile eco-friendly low-level energy heating system by using novel textile heating panels and the low emission pore-burner heating technology

The use of low-potential energy is an energy-saving way to heat. It requires large heating surfaces as well as effective hot-water supply. Textile heating mats with inserted plastic tubes to allow the hot water to flow are well suitable to be such heating surfaces. Pore-burning is an efficient way to heat the water. Combining heating mats with pore-burning equipment, an innovative low-temperature heating system is achieved. It can, for instance, be used in gardening as well as with a variety of both temporary and permanent heating surfaces. 

 

Summary

The project targets are a mobile eco-friendly low-level energy heating system by developing flexible textile heating panels and, at the same time, by improving the pore-burner heating technology to supply hot water.

Based on investigation into how the materials tested behave when they are processed on knitting machines, specimen of heating panels are made. At the same time, the pore-burner heating technology is improved and tested. Tests to define both flow and thermodynamic values serve to characterise the system as a whole, both targets being considered. The results reached on laboratory-scale are complemented by comprehensive tests in practice, which opens up new fields of application.

Results:

  • It can be said that heating panels equipped with inserted plastic tubing to allow hot water to flow in them represent flexible heating systems whose design can be easily adapted to the uses in question. The textile materials used to make them may well be recycled ones, which is eco-friendly. To give one example, it contributes to save land-fill space.
  • The pore-burner heating technology means high performance with low emission of hazardous substances. Heating panels based on pore-burner heating technology can be used without any problems. A high number of reference products and specimen give evidence of the functionality of this innovative heating technology.
  • Most preferably, this heating system is used in gardening. In this project, more than 500 m² of heating mat were made and used in gardening. Gardening enterprises, most of all, take advantage of the system being mobile, flexible in use, energy-saving and very effective seen from a horticultural point of view.
  • In the longer term, markets may open up in the fields of both temporary and permanent heating surfaces, e.g. for use in systems heating floors or walls, in open-air fields, in heat-transfer systems using environmental energy or waste energy. Alternatively, prospects are good to use this technology for cooling purposes.
