Organic Waste Treatment

Material utilisation of hemicellulose-rich biomass residues

The primary objective of this project was to develop processes for the material utilisation of hemicelluloses, which are a by-product of the extraction of bioethanol from lignocellulosic plant materials (e.g. straw). In biorefineries, their utilisation is currently largely limited to the generation of steam and electricity or to co-digestion to ethanol. For the latter, there are technical challenges that lead to an economically still insufficient balance of biorefineries.
