Common digestion of bio waste and sewage sludge in a digester of a purification plant

A local waste-management concept plans the common digestion of bio waste and sewage sludge for the generation of fermentation gas and production of a compostable residual sludge. To this end the separately collected bio waste was pre-treated in a material dissolver and putrefied together with sewage sludge in the already existing digester.

 

Summary

The project of the town Baden-Baden planned the common digestion of biologically degradable materials (bio waste) separated in households, and sewage sludge for the generation of fermentation gas and production of a compostable residual sludge and thus a clear recycling of waste. To this end the separately collected bio waste was pre-treated in a material dissolver and putrefied in the already existing digester together with sewage sludge.

The basic procedure pattern consists of the following partial measures:

  • raw material collection, 
  • material dissolver, 
  • separation of suspended and settable solids, 
  • centrifugation for solid-matter separation and composting of solids, 
  • digestion, 
  • biogas generation and utilization, 
  • drainage and composting of the sludges as well as compost utilization.

With the plant it was shown how existing purification plant technologies for the utilization of pre-treated residual wastes can be reliably operated while minimizing environmental problems.
